For the first part of the project, thorough research was conducted on various international wilding models. The Miyawaki method was chosen after the environmental results and the feasibility of implementing different methods were assessed, due to its significant potential for the recovery of soil after erosion, and the increase of biodiversity in densely populated urban areas. The results of the investigation were compiled into a single document, which served as a basis for academic engagement and project coordination.
After obtaining the necessary permissions from the Bombay Municipal Corporation, Sustainability Heroes has implemented community tree plantation drives in several locations of Mumbai.
January 2021: Hanging Gardens – 150 plants with 200 volunteers
January 2021: PDP – 150 plants with 200 volunteers
August 2021: Chembur – 1,500 plants with 1,500 volunteers
October 2023: JBCN – 100 plants
October 2023: Mumbai University
Sustainability Heroes created and facilitated workshops for 250 children in middle school, which aimed at familiarizing them with the ideas of environmentally friendly urban greening in a practical way. These were part of a school program on Earth Day, and students had the opportunity to work with native saplings, sustainable pots, and simple home-garden plants. We also taught soil care techniques and the oxygenative benefits of plants.
In an effort to broaden environmental knowledge among children, Sustainability Heroes created three original children's storybooks that teach the environment and ecology through easy-to-understand stories.
The Sprout House: The story follows Lily and Leo as they make a greenhouse out of recycled materials to protect their seedlings.
The Composting Crew: A family of worms narrates this book, introducing children to composting and explaining how decomposition recycles waste into usable soil.
Magic of Miyawaki: A young child and a group of animals learn how the Miyawaki method helps dying forests by making dense micro-plantations.
These books were created to make children environmentally literate from a young age.
