Sustainability Heroes is a student-led initiative that aims to increase urban wilding in the city in an attempt to restore the green spaces of Mumbai and raise environmental awareness. Beginning in Chembur, the project researched different methods of wilding models used worldwide, ultimately settling on the Miyawaki method due to its success in restoring urban ecological balance. Subsequently, we collaborated with the Bombay Municipal Corporation to carry out several tree planting campaigns. In addition to the on-ground work, workshops were held for school students, greening sessions were conducted, and teaching resources were created.
The next step for Sustainability Heroes is to continue broadening our educational and community programs, which will focus on the development of youth leadership in environmental action. With a planned set of children’s resources, mentoring activities, and sustained partnerships, the project aims to enable students, particularly from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, to design their own initiatives, champion climate-friendly behaviours, and contribute to long-term urban greening in Mumbai.
