The city of Mumbai is currently experiencing catastrophic air pollution levels, and over the past three decades alone, has experienced a 42.5% decline in urban green cover. Studies indicate that the amount of green space per individual in Mumbai is less than 1.24 square meters, while the World Health Organization recommends a minimum of 9 sqm. The environmental damage resulting from overcrowding in the densely populated areas is exacerbated by rapid urbanization, the rise in industrial emissions, and the decline in vegetative cover.
Such environmental pressures are primarily concentrated in heavily industrial areas like Chembur, where the particulate matter and heat island effects are almost always double the safety limits suggested by the authorities. As per the research conducted by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, some areas in eastern Mumbai that are heavily polluted have even daily particulate matter levels that are 3.7 times higher than the national averages for urban areas. This situation leads to respiratory problems and affects the local ecosystem, and is likely to be a cause of concern for both mankind and nature over a long period of time.
Sustainability Heroes is a social initiative that intends to break down the structural hindrances that prevent urban wilding by means of youth engagement and by the inclusion of those communities that are the least resourced in the process of creating and implementing the greening initiatives. By means of plantation work, educational interventions, and user-friendly learning materials, the endeavor aspires to not only make the city green but also to deepen the ecological knowledge and to spread the environmental movement that is led by the local people all over Mumbai.
